Instinct prevails yet again January 26, 2005

It took bloody ages, but six days after we put the ants in their new habitat they’ve finally recovered enough from their trip to give in to their instincts and dig in. According to the documentation they’re supposed to start digging within 48 hours, but I guess they didn’t read the book. The straight holes in the background are ones we helpfully provided them, as recommended by the manual. Again, the ants weren’t informed of their expected behaviour. Instead they decided to completely ignore our pre-fab holes to start their own in the exact opposite corner of the one they were huddled in for days on end. Strange creatures, ants.

Onno, what do these ants live in? Jelly? Also, I rather not have you post mt age on the web…..:P Me being old and all…..
Yeah, it’s some sort of NASA-designed supergel that they can dig in and live from, too. They designed it to shoot ‘em up in space to see if they would dig similar patterns without gravity to help them get their bearings. I can’t find anything about the results online, but one result is that now you can buy this AntWorks thing and even order ants to go with them. You can’t get much more low maintenance pets. Even a plant needs more attention.
Also, not my fault you’re always going to be much, much older than me. :P I’m trying to catch up but I doubt I’ll be able to catch you.
Hi,
My name is Janneke and I’m a graphic designer. I work at the studio of a publisher in Eindhoven. We want to publish a serie of travelguides and therefor I was looking at the internet for photo’s. Then I came across your photo gallery and I’m interested to use your photo’s in the guides.
Maybe you can contact me about this.
Hope to here from you soon!

I’ve had my Antaquarium for a whole weeek now, the first batch of ants that I got wasn’t so active.. they were huge and nervous, one of ‘em got stuck in the hole that I dug and couldn’t free herself so I guess she died there.. the others just did nothing so I emptied them back in the yard. I got another batch of smaller ones instead hoping that they’d do better, but here they are just running around climbing the walls but NEVER digging, I’m starting to lose faith in ‘em too!
