World Press Photo couple May 8, 2005

We went to the World Press Photo exhibit today in the Oude Kerk, a yearly treat because of the extremely high quality of the work on display. Strangely, they don’t seem to appreciate people taking photos there. Right when I was done someone from the organisation walked up to me to explain that I really wasn’t supposed to take photos of the displayed photos. His reaction at my explanation that I was merely taking photos of people was so disbelieving that I immediately disliked him and decided not to show him the evidence. Whatever. This is the only photo I took where displayed photos are actually somewhat visible.

Bizarre, there were tons of people walking around with cameras and taking pictures, myself included. It’s a bit childish of the organisation to complain.
So, which pictures impressed you the most?
Yeah, it was really strange. I understand the copyright issue but this guy was taking it a bit far. He only told me and then went back to his booth, too. Plenty of other people with cameras.
I’m generally drawn towards photos of ‘normal’ people in extraordinary situations, so the stuff in the background of this photo and the rocket village photos you mentioned stood out to me most. I also really liked one sports photo - some backstroke swimmer under water, with perfectly focused bubbles right above him and fantastic refracted lighting. It was pretty good this year.
Lovely moment!!
