Karmengo Jaiak July 9, 2006

In a contest of sheer lingual incomprehensibility (in the Roman alphabet) I think Basque would win hands down. Lacking the weird punctuation of a similarly bizarre language like Hungarian, it actually makes you think you can understand what’s going on for a second when you first come across it. Karmengo Jaiak means something like Carmen Festival, named after the neighborhood the festival is in.
Amusingly, Google “recognizes” Basque as being Spanish when it attempts to translate it, which I imagine is not something the Basque people are all too thrilled about…
I never did figure out what the slightly bemused-looking crab had to do with anything.
