I shoot a lot of concerts though for friends. The best thing i have noticed for the drummer is if you are directly in front or sometimes even on the sides you can just kneel down a bit. It gives you a different angle and usually allows to get the cymbals out of the drummers face. As for flash I usually use a flash for the drummer solely because the environment usually doesn't light the drummer. As for the 800 ISO on digital cameras it doesn't show up as much as it would in film. When you go as high as 3200 it will show, but like one of you said the grain can look neat in band photos.
